Big surprise for my 11 yr old
We surprised my 11 yr old to an unforgettable night on Sunday night. We totally surprised him and I love surprises, don't you??? Well, I know some people do not... but I am a huge fan of them!!! I love to give them and get them!
Last minute, we changed our plans slightly and instead, we decided, as a family, to make the trek out to see the great composer/musician ERIC GENIUS. Do you know of him? If not, why not?!?!
CLICK HERE to see his website and listen to some of his most beautiful, inspiring and totally God given talent and music and learn about him.
My 11 yr old son is a big fan of his. Last summer he picked up one of his CD's and has listened to it daily ever since.
What a great role model he is!!!
We had a long drive up and got up there much earlier than anticipated, along with all the terrible rain we endured, thanks be to God. I asked him to come with me and as we walked up the stairwell, still wondering what we were doing as a surprise, I pointed to the sign/poster. He looked at it then looked at me.....looked at it then looked at me...then smiled enormously. At that smile, I said enthusiastically, "Come on!!! Let's go!" and ran up the rest of the stairs and ran up behind me, both of us like 11 yr olds!
Little did we know...we were the first ones there! We went in and there he was!!!
A sudden 'almost- teenager -cool' came upon him, but I know this child of mine, and for sure his insides were doing somersaults!!!
They shook hands and talked briefly. I even got a picture of them together. What a blessing! This is like a once in a lifetime experience!!! Thank You God.
My own 11 yr old self was ecstatic for him!!!
Oh, how I knew he would always remember this moment. How fortunate and blessed I felt to be there with him. It was all God to make this happen. This was something very much out of our comfort zone, for many reasons. But, for him and for our family, we knew we had to go to this concert.
And it was totally worth every effort. Every frustration. Everything!
I love the joy of 11 yr olds! It is so contagious.
My 11 yr old is now even more energized to keep practicing and playing the piano. He has a God given gift and I am so thankful for him to be following in Eric Genuis' footsteps!
God bless,
Mary

Sign of Spring* and pics
*First tick of the season was just found on my 11 yr old boy's shoulder.
Oh wonderful, here we go!
On a lighter note...here are some super cute pics I snapped up last week.
Here is my duo---my 'double trouble' boys--don't they look so cute? Of course they do! :) This is how they entertain themselves while Momma is teaching the bigger kidos at the dinning room table right next to this deck. They got themselves all 'decked' out (ha ha) as firemen ready to fight the blaze of the play house.
And here is my 6 yr old sweetie girl doing what sweet girls do...dolls and doll houses are the best!
Gotta go!
God bless,
Mary

So, do you notice how high up these doll houses are, up on top of our train table? Haa! Our Lil' Lady is getting into everything! And of this writing, since this pic was taken last week, we have moved that table downstairs b/c our Lil' Lady has showed us how much of a climbing monkey she is!
Amazing that within a week, she can go from cute and slow crawling baby INTO a cute and fast running baby and wants to do everything her big siblings are doing!!!
Gotta go!

Recovering
I just wanted to let you know that I am feeling a lot better both physically and emotionally. It was a long tough week and we are so grateful to God for the gift of life He sent our way, even if it was only for 10 weeks.
Thank you for praying. I cannot find the words to explain how uplifted and supported I felt during all of this through the praying of family & friends. Thank you, thank you so much.
Life is short, pray hard!
I entered our little Therese's name into the "Book of Life" at the Church of the Holy Innocents Shrine in NYC. I vaguely remember going to it in my very early 20's and here is where our sweet Therese's name is where others can know of her short 10 week life and to pray to her. It is so special. They even sent me a certificate with her name on it. (I wish I could figure out how to print it! It is with some diff. format than what we have.)
Sometimes when it rains, it pours...doesn't it?
Not only was this week 'the week' for releasing our baby, but my oldest also fell on a super sharp rock and ended up with 5/6 stitches on his leg, then he ran a fairly high fever that we thought was associated w/the wound but thanks be to God, it was just a virus, then my husband had a sinus infection...and on and on and on.
And then on the forecast, it is calling for 5 straight days of RAIN-Mon-Fri. Oh my goodness. I do not look forward to that with 7 kids inside (4 of them boys!) but I am so happy that it is sunny right now and finally we are all feeling better.
The great news is that ....Tomorrow is our 12th Wedding Anniversary!!!
God bless,
Mary

Best advice ever!=NAPS
Everyday around 1 till about 3-give or take 30mins on either side is our 'Family quite time'.
This is time for the kids to try to settle down to rest-little ones take naps-sometimes if its a super great day, 4 of them nap at the same time~!!! wooohooo! Usually it is Lil' Lady , my 3 yr old adrenaline running boy, and 4 yr old 'too big for a daily nap but still needs a few naps a week" boy.
The others rest by looking at books, listening to books on CD, drawing, or they (try) to play quietly downstairs.
This is also my time to regroup and rest. I overlook the toys and clothes strewn throughout the house. I overlook the left out lunch on the counters and on the kitchen floor and the overflowing trash. I make time for me. I have to. This is my survival and thrival technique. I close my bedroom door over a little and just plop down exhausted, sometimes even in a big pile of clean laundry. I close my eyes in hopes to actually catch a few zzzz's if possible. Then if I can, with a cup of tea in hand, I try to catch up on emails, blogs, phone calls. Before the little ones wake, I begin to make dinner or at least have the idea of what I will make.
When I share this, many moms and others look at me in awe that I can do this.
For me, it has ALWAYS been this way. With my first child was almost one yrs old, another seasoned mom of 6 told me that I had to do this. For me to try not to give up his nap too early and if he did (which he as 2 when he did), to continue to put him in his room or crib with tons of books for quiet time. This was the BEST ADVICE that I ever got!!!
This nap time was crucial. And boy, is she right. It is~!
I really wonder how moms do it these days without down time. With a busy life, in order to keep an energy level at a decent (not always top notch!) level, this is so necessary for me.
This is not all the quiet beautiful time of rest everyday. Many times in a day, I may come out of my room or off the couch to remind them how and what "QUIET" is supposed to be like! Many days, they get so wrapped up in playing (since they are schooling most of the morning) that their level of quiet certainly is NOT the same as mine.
During this time, my oldest son, who is in 5th grade, has to be constantly reminded to do his school work and how much he can accomplish when the little ones are not around him, bothering him, or being loud. This quiet time is the best he has to get focused...yet, it is so tough for him. Poor kid. It's hard to see his younger siblings playing or reading or drawing-just what he really wants to do.
Anyway, long story short.... today after I got up after a little rest, I called for my oldest in which he did not respond. He was not in the extra room doing school work or doing his science lab experiment or his reading comprehension. Nope. His sisters told me he was in the backyard. When he came in, I ask him where he was and how he got out there, since he did not exit and re-enter through the deck door.
Head tilted and quietly, he glanced at me and said "Uh....through the basement bathroom window..."
"Why?" I questioned him.
"Uh....Because I am a boy?"
Best explanation. Good reason. But still....
God bless,
Mary

Any advice: How do YOU get the point across to a kid
that he is older so ...he has more school work expected?

Pure joy
If you could only have just seen the intense joy and realization that my oldest son had on his face a minute ago, and how he found out he can actually help another person...it would probably could convert tons of people.
The kids are all either asleep or reading right now. My oldest walks over to me as I am tidying up...
"Mom, what is a novena?"
Then I went on to tell him and he said..."So, I can say one for someone?"
"Sure you can." I reply.
"You mean I can say one for a special family member to come back to the Catholic Faith?"
"Oh, indeed you can. Yes, you can." I conclude.
Up on his tippy toes he went with his heart shining through his smile as wide as the ocean, and his eyes are big as watermelons and I do believe I even heard a tiny squeal.
"So, what do I say? I mean, which one?" he asks.
We google novenas, to who else but what i thought appropriate...his patron saint. Sure enough, right on EWTN site, there it was. I copied it and printed it and off he went with joy.
This is what it's all about, right?
Thank you God for allowing me to see how You are so powerful to work in little people's hearts and souls. Help me to become like a little child, so that I too, can enter Heaven.
God bless,
M

Give me a break
Ok, where do I start?
I feel like all I do lately is rant on this blog and I do hope you don't mind (at least not too much). It sure seems like when it rains, it pours. Such is this season for me lately.
I mentioned about our sleeping issues HERE and then our Advent issues HERE.
Then late Monday morning one of my little guys ended up getting sick to his stomach. I think it was just too much chocolate from St. Nick so early in the morn. Since then no one else has gotten it, so that is why I think so. At least I can hope! :) It was enough to throw me for a loop as any mother knows---we become almost obsessed with every noise and movement they make running with a bucket after them or making sure a radius of 5 feet around the couch is covered in blankets and towels!!! Ok, that is too gross too early in the morning to talk anymore about so I'll stop there...
Then yesterday was the bomb.
2 kids in the Emergency Room simultaneously...but for totally different reasons. My oh my.
My little 2 yr old fell into the corner of the fireplace with bricks, right on the corner on his temple. Anytime the head gets a laceration, watch out-blood everywhere! It was so nasty. It looked horrible and I flipped out. My hubby made it home in his shortest time ever (thank God no cops sighted him!).
He was home no more than 5 mins then I took the 2 yr old to the ER.
I was there in the ER no more than 15 minutes and then I got a call from hubby that our 10 yr old was having a major allergic reaction with hives everywhere and he started to say his throat was sore. (This is totally new to him and any of our kids-we never had anything like this before. We have no allergies in our family and we still cannot pinpoint what the hives came from). In less than 2 mins, he and all the 5 kids were en route to the ER.
I was freaking out. I could not be there for my 10 yr old, but thank God my hubby was. But it still is not the same as a momma.
Once I saw him walk through to the ER, my heart sunk as looked absolutely horrible and to think I just saw him 20 mins before!!?!? So, there I was with 2 of my kidos-my oldest and youngest both sharing a stretcher in the ER.
Never a dull moment.
After 4 hours, a little bit of nickelodeon and an Iwo Jima movie, 3 medications, special super glue for the hole in my 2 yr old's head, and no nap for the cranky 2 yr old... we were home.
The stress that comes with all this the past few weeks is close to unbearable. But on this great feast day of Mary- the Immaculate Conception, I do feel some consolation.
May you have a blessed feast day. May Mary intercede on my behalf with my greatest desires. Amen.
God bless,
M

Busy
I've been busy doing this...
with the 5 of them...
while my oldest is doing this...
I sure hope he knows that we still love him to bake with us...
but him being in 4th grade now, bigger things are expected of him.
Please do say a prayer, if you remember, b/c sometimes growing up is just so hard.
God bless,

A Momma's wonderings...
Whatever I do today, whatever my family will do today...
let us do it together.
Let us be together and relish our time together.
This time we have...together...is..... just ....so.... short.
TIME...what a gift.
My oldest will be out of our home in probably 8 short years. We've had him under our care longer now than compared with what we have left.
Have I done a decent job? A good job being his momma?
Have I held him enough, read to him enough, talked with him enough, listened enough?
Does he know the depth of my love for him?
Is he secure in his love for God, and in his knowledge of how much GOD LOVES HIM?
Will he stay close to Jesus and Mary all through his life?
Will he keep close to the Sacraments, gaining those graces he so desperately needs to have in this world?
Does he know he can come to me and find his safe haven?
Will he trust me enough to confide in me his worries, his concerns, his innermost desires?
Not that I have too much on my mind lately..... HA!
(Of course all these thoughts pertain to ALL of my wonderful children, but b/c my oldest is my oldest and this is all new terrain to this Momma, I directed these wonderings towards him.)
So, this is my goal for today. Sunday. Be together. Be present for and to each other.
What will you do today that can't be put off till tomorrow?
God bless,
Mary

Need: Real Rocket Scientist
Kid #1 says to me as he is loading up the dishwasher right now...
"Ya know, Mom. I really need a rocket scientist to talk to me."
"Why?" I respond quizzically.
"Because I talk so much and I need a rocket scientist to talk things over with. Lots of what I think about is just so...complicated."
If you know of a rocket scientist to talk to my almost 10 yr old son, please do let me know!!!;)
Ha Ha!!! Love this kid!
God bless,
Mary

Early morning book discussion
"Wow, Mom, check out this book I am reading."
I look at what is in his hand, The Three Musketeers.
"That's great buddy!" I reply.
Then he goes on to say..."Yeah, and I'm actually reading it, not just looking at the pictures and stuff!"
Haa!!!
Funny! At least he is honest and at least he is reading!!!
God bless,
Mary

Do you know your Elements?
If I did well in Chemistry way back when, then I would not have gotten the cliff notes chemistry edition.
If my parents did not hold onto that cliff notes book, then I would not have packed it in our boxes.
If I did not pack it randomly in some toy box, then my 9 yr old would not have found it.
If he did not find it, he would not be staying up late learning the Table of Elements.
If he did not learn the Table of Elements, then he would not be teaching his 6 and 4 yr old siblings the Elements this morning at breakfast.
I do think that all things happen for a reason...don't you!?!?
God bless,
Mary

Cemetary drive by
My 6 yr old says to me in the car...after doing our usual Thursday errand outing. Mind you, we do this every single Thursday morning:
"Mom, where are we going now?"
I replied with no answer to see if he would say "oh yeah, I remember!" or something to that extent.
Then quickly my oldest replies:
"Oh, c'mon! You know where we are going! Just imagine if you were in purgatory. I mean, you'd really want people to pray for you, right?"
LOVE THESE VAN RIDE DISCUSSIONS!!!
BTW, on Thursday mornings, we (all 6 kids +1 baby in utero and I) do our errands and always (well, most of the time) do a drive by through the town cemetary and we pray the decade of the Rosary. I found that this works miracles (literally, probably too!) b/c they are restrained in their seats and cannot get out! haaa haaa. Plus, it gives them great memories that I hope will continue to be a tradition in their lives as they grow up. It is such a simple thing to do, so easy and so helpful to others!!!
God bless,
Mary

Homeschool Talk
My 9 year old son, kid #1, said about his1yr old laughing hysterically running around brother who was being chased by his 3 yr old brother:
"Mom! He is trembling with excitement!"
HAAA!!!
This day is full of funnies lately! :)
God bless,
Mary

Homeschool Perk
Words simply cannot contain my excitement today!
My oldest son, 9years old, is going to play at his first ever piano recital! It is the same feeling that I had with my now 7 year old daughter who danced at her first dance recital-ballet and tap. Be it that she was almost only 4 years old (yikes!) and there she was on the stage in a huge high school auditorium. We treated and took both my parents and my husbands' parents to that recital. That day will forever be etched in my memory as one of the proudest mom moments ever. Awesome day 4 years ago.
I am overwhelmed with the thoughts of how time flies. I am ever so grateful for this gift of homeschooling. I truly believe that if my son was not homeschooled, he would not be taking piano lessons-thus not partaking in this beautiful piano recital today! You see, all my children truly love music...making it or listening to it. We knew this and prayed for about 2 years for God to lead us to a piano teacher that would be willing to come to our home to teach my son on the keyboard that someone lent us. Wouldn't you know it, but the coach of my 2 childrens' soccer team last spring, mentioned that she knew someone who taught piano but has not seen or talked to him in a few years...but then she remembered something...she opened her purse and pulled out her wallet and gave me this old beat up business card of a piano teacher! I called him this past August and he told me that he did not make house calls for piano lessons but....since we homeschooled....we could be flexible, right?....and anyway.....he was so busy teaching after school time and throughout the evening....he did not have any more free time slots.....but since we homeschool....he could come to our home....early in the day...TO OUR HOME! Got that?!?! How cool! He is fantastic and my son likes him as a teacher.
Perfect timing. Perfect match. Thank You God.
If we did send out kids to school, I know for sure, that our time would be limited to what we could possibly sign our children up for, ie: extra ciricular activities and since he is so very boy-ish and athletic and full of energy-that extra stuff, for sure, would be a sport...soccer or whatever. I doubt it highly that it would be piano. That would be a shame b/c we would never get to see the blossoming beauty of his hidden talent of playing the piano. I am so grateful. Thank You God.
You see now? This is all such a rush for me and a very grateful day for my children, my family, the gifts of homeschooling (no matter how tough and crazy and chaotic it usually is) and for music and piano recitals!
Thank you God. Thank you Mary and St. Joseph for protecting my children and leading us to homeschool.
So, here we are, getting ready for a 3:30 pm recital and I am so nervious for him! I wonder if I'll be able to eat anything before the show! haaa haaa! :)
Gotta go get ready!
God bless,
Mary
