Modesty spoken from a 7 year old

"Mom?  Next year, for my bathing suit, I want to have a swim dress.  Short sleeves and it goes down like this, all the way to right below my knees.  Ok?"

What could I say?  How could I deny this?  What a beautiful thing.

God bless your day!
C'mon cheer it with me:  TGIF!!! TGIF!!!! TGIF!!!!

Sign of Spring* and pics

*First tick of the season was just found on my 11 yr old boy's shoulder.
Oh wonderful, here we go!

On a lighter note...here are some super cute pics I snapped up last week.

Here is my duo---my 'double trouble' boys--don't they look so cute?  Of course they do! :)  This is how they entertain themselves while Momma is teaching the bigger kidos at the dinning room table right next to this deck.  They got themselves all 'decked' out (ha ha) as firemen ready to fight the blaze of the play house.

And here is my 6 yr old sweetie girl doing what sweet girls do...dolls and doll houses are the best!

So, do you notice how high up these doll houses are, up on top of our train table?  Haa!  Our Lil' Lady is getting into everything! And of this writing, since this pic was taken last week, we have moved that table downstairs b/c our Lil' Lady has showed us how much of a climbing monkey she is!

Amazing that within a week, she can go from cute and slow crawling baby INTO a cute and fast running baby and wants to do everything her big siblings are doing!!!

Gotta go!
God bless,

With God...

Weekends.

We love them.  These are the days that Daddy is home, there is limited school work to be done and ample time for play and fun-work around the house.

Yes, I said work.

My hubby is amazing...have I mentioned that before?  I am so in awe of the man he is and wants to become and how he truly works hard at it every single day to be the man God created him to be.  He has been so inspired by God to do real 'man work' as in saw and wood and carpentry and building projects, not only to get things done around the house, and to build things to save us money.  More importantly, he is doing this not just by himself....but with his sons at his side.  He is determined to learn and to teach his boys along side him.  Awesome!  He was not taught this as a young boy/man, even though his Dad is a great dad.  This is one area that he wished he knew more of.  The determined person that he is, he has decided to teach himself and his sons as well.

But its not even the learning that is the impetus of all this hard work.  It is spending time together with his sons that is driving him to do it.  What a man!!!

What a joy it is to see what these men have made.  These are no easy peasy projects!

2 benches for our dining room table
Bookshelf for me :)
Bookshelf for our school books only
Bookshelf for daughter #2 who is an avid reader
step stool
and now onto finishing a doll house

"CHARGE!!!"

There is something quite comical about little girls dressed in girly pink and purple, wearing skirts and being lined up for teams to be chosen.  Then to hear those sweet innocent high pitched, squealey girly voices yell out "CHARGE! AHH!!! ARRRR!!!"

With brothers, all things are possible.

Haaaa haaaaa

Best advice ever!=NAPS

Everyday around 1 till about 3-give or take 30mins on either side is our 'Family quite time'.

This is time for the kids to try to settle down to rest-little ones take naps-sometimes if its a super great day, 4 of them nap at the same time~!!! wooohooo!   Usually it is Lil' Lady , my 3 yr old adrenaline running boy, and 4 yr old 'too big for a daily nap but still needs a few naps a week" boy.

The others rest by looking at books, listening to books on CD, drawing, or they (try) to play quietly downstairs.

This is also my time to regroup and rest. I overlook the toys and clothes strewn throughout the house.  I overlook the left out lunch on the counters and on the kitchen floor and the overflowing trash.  I make time for me.  I have to.  This is my survival and thrival technique.  I close my bedroom door over a little and just plop down exhausted, sometimes even  in a big pile of clean laundry.  I close my eyes in hopes to actually catch a few zzzz's if possible.  Then if I can, with a cup of tea in hand, I try to catch up on emails, blogs, phone calls.   Before the little ones wake, I begin to make dinner or at least have the idea of what I will make.

When I share this, many moms and others look at me in awe that I can do this.

For me, it has ALWAYS been this way.  With my first child was almost one yrs old, another seasoned mom of 6 told me that I had to do this. For me to try not to give up his nap too early and if he did (which he as 2 when he did), to continue to put him in his room or crib with tons of books for quiet time.  This was the BEST ADVICE that I ever got!!!

This nap time was crucial.  And boy, is she right.  It is~!

I really wonder how moms do it these days without down time.  With a busy life, in order to keep an energy level at a decent (not always top notch!) level, this is so necessary for me.

This is not all the quiet beautiful time of rest everyday.  Many times in a day, I may come out of my room or off the couch to remind them how and what "QUIET" is supposed to be like!  Many days, they get so wrapped up in playing (since they are schooling most of the morning)  that their level of quiet certainly is NOT the same as mine.

During this time, my oldest son, who is in 5th grade,  has to be constantly reminded to do his school work and how much he can accomplish when the little ones are not around him, bothering him, or being loud.  This quiet time is the best he has to get focused...yet, it is so tough for him.  Poor kid.  It's hard to see his younger siblings playing or reading or drawing-just what he really wants to do.

Any advice:  How do YOU get the point across to a kid
that he is older so ...he has more school work expected?

Anyway, long story short.... today after I got up after a little rest, I called for my oldest in which he did not respond.  He was not in the extra room doing school work or doing his science lab experiment or his reading comprehension.  Nope.  His sisters told me he was in the backyard.  When he came in, I ask him where he was and how he got out there, since he did not exit and re-enter through the deck door.

Head tilted and quietly, he glanced at me and said "Uh....through the basement bathroom window..."

"Why?"  I questioned him.

"Uh....Because I am a boy?"

Best explanation.  Good reason.  But still....

God bless,
Mary

Kitchens...love it, love it not...

I have a love-hate relationship w/my kitchen.

I love the fact that my whole family likes to hang out in this specific room in the house.

I love how the kids all coral around a little kitchen table squeezing in 6 chairs where only 3 would be most comfortable.

I love how they bring their books in and lay on the kitchen floor just b/c the others are in this room and Momma is in the room too.

I love how when I am cooking or cleaning (about 70% of my day), how drawn my kids are to be around me.  Whatever they are doing, they bring it in this room and plop themselves down....near me.

I love how eating and talking go hand in hand.  Some of our best conversations have been in the kitchen.   Some of the best moments of parenting happen in the kitchen.

Learning math while cooking.  Painting tons of pics.  Spelling tests while Momma cooks.  Social Studies--learning about generosity and patience while waiting for dinner and setting the table in the dining room.   The list goes on and on.

What a wonderful feeling.  (Thank you God :))

I love this room.

I love kitchens.  Don't you?

But do you know what I do not love about it?  Actually I really really don't like it?  OK, I admit...I pretty much hate it.  Period.

The size of this kitchen.  It is 1/3 the size of our last kitchen.  Not a big deal if a family is not that big or does not truly "LIVE" all day in the house, right?  No.  But, for us?  This does not work.

I guess you can say our kitchen is a work in kitchen with very limited counter space.  Barely enough room for those chairs I mentioned above.  It is really tight.  Then throw in a highchair, and it's quite the maze to get around.  Seriously.

I dream of a big kitchen where we all can be around comfortably.  A big long farm style table.  We've got the benches already (thanks to Daddy and the boys!!! You rock!)

Kitchens.

Love them and hate this one.

God bless,
Mary

Snowsuits already???

We went from hot and muggy humid weather directly into very cold days of 50* for the past number of days.  Add that into the mix of 3 weeks of rainy cloudy days and this Momma is going a bit crrrrazy!!!

I also don't have the guts to turn ON the heat...just yet.  So, our house has been lingering around 60* throughout the day and it is quite chilly.  Not too bad, but enough that we have the massive amounts of clothes that have escaped from storage bins-the changing of seasons always brings out mega amounts of laundry and clothes galore, right?! :)

So, that leads me to allow the kids to let them put on their snow suits (well, they have to stay warm somehow, right?) and sleeping bags (warmth, OK?) and "sledding" down our staircases all dolled up in these particular super FUNNY outfits!

And I will add in that those kids are my boys.  Not my girls-ha ha!!! :)  Those girls just finished their math assignments and are off to play dolls for a little bit.

OK, so I have noted quite a lot of things my boys have been up to lately.   It is just that they are so peculiar and so well...boy-ish!  They just crack me up.  Totally.

Boys need to be boys---that is how I also "just do it"---having let them be just who they are w/out stopping their creativity. Schoolwork had to take a little recess break....and I needed to blog :)   Mind you, the little boys are totally loving every minute of it too!!!

I might even make some hot cocoa for us :)

Best go now.

God bless,
Mary

Bugs and Insects and Reptiles...oh my!

It's a good thing that I don't mind bugs and insects and anything else my kids seem to find and catch and run up to me in great wonder and amazement and with great confidence and joy!
I was looking through my pics on my computer to send some overdue pics of the kids and their bday parties to my family members and came across TONS (and I really do mean tons!) of pics of all the little creatures my kids (girls included, thank you!) that they found

One of my favorite...praying mantis' are sooooooo cool!!!!  Yes, it is one of my favorites...if there is such a thing?
I guess so...for this momma!: )

Look at this little guy!  We have found about 5 or 6 over the summer and they are always a huge hit.  Here is one enjoying our little baby pool (and we were done using it!) so it became his little home for the day.

WOnder and amazement of God's creations...

Looking at his every move--close ups!  My 4 yr old loved to see him pop his head out and then quickly in when he raised his voice at the poor little guy.  It was quite funny, though!

Our little habitat for a friendly toad

Can't get enough of these creatures...

Mr. Praying Mantis-see this one is brown?  The other one in the top pic is green.  They are really cool! :)

Moms of boys should never boast

Seasoned Moms just know things...

I think I may just be starting to be one!!! :)

A minute ago, my 4 yr old son came upstairs asking for duct tape that my oldest son needed to tape up a box.  (All 4 boys were downstairs.)

I ripped off 2 feet long of duct tape and handed it to him.

But as I handed it to him...I asked, a bit cautiously, "No one is in that box...right?"

"No, Mom, no one is in it."

Phew.  Good.

See?  I NEVER would have thought to ask that question a few years ago.  Then again, I did not have 4 ACTIVE and CREATIVE BOYS either back then either! haa haa

Life is full of lessons!
_________________________________________________________________________________
God is always teaching me things.

OKAY, did I mention I have BOYS?!?! HA!!! HA!!!
I was just about to post this above and then my oldest son ran up asking for more duct tape and told me with great excitement that he was boxing up the 2 yr old boy but that he also put in '2 breathing holes so don't get worry, Mom".  (WHAT?!!?!)

I guess I may never understand boys and that they will ALWAYS have something brewing that will make me shake my head, wrinkle my forehead in disbelief.  Boys!!! :)  Gotta love them.

Mary

Older and Wiser

I know my kids are getting older.

How?  you ask?

This morning we met up with my dear friend and her 4 kids (+1 in belly-yay!!!) at a playground/park.  It was super fun!

Then a some other kids showed up and they were a bit, uh... I guess you can say-un-ruly.  My first reaction was "Ugh. Oh boy..."  Then my 2nd reaction "Oh well-tis a great learning experience!!!"  (What a geeky homeschool thought! haa haa)

Anyway, for the most part, everyone interacted fairly well besides the expected bit of tension, teasing and little fights here and there between Boys vs. Girls..(love this crazy young age!).

Then we got home.

My oldest daughter says to me "Hey Mom, ya know what I said to those boys that were teasing us?"

(Oh no, I thought!)  "No, what did you say?"  I replied.

"I told them if they keep teasing me then I was gonna go get my big brother and he is 10!"

(Yes!   Good girl!  You go girl!!!)  "Oh really?"  I said, "So, did they stop?"

She says, "I think so and they sure got a bit nervous when they saw him coming.  That boy was only 9, ya know."

Big brothers totally rule!
They absolutely do.

Totally lovin' this moment

My 4 yr old little man ran to my oldest daughter and said, very giggly:

"I thought I married Momma, but I didn't!  (insert heee heee giggle giggle)  I just married 'little lady'!"

You see, just moments before I was nursing little lady and 4 yr old little man came over...

"Oh, Momma, I just have to give her a kiss."

(Btw, this is nothing new...4 yr old little man adores and I mean, ADORES, his baby sister and is so sweet w/her.)

So I propped her up and just then she turned her head to see him and BOOM-he smooched her right on her lips! :)  The giggles and smirks arose from within him!  Oh if you could have seen his face!

Now, according to my kids, if a man and woman kiss on the lips, that equals marriage.

(Not a bad indicator, wouldn't you say???)

He tells me that he just married little lady and I have tried to convince him that he did not.  How do I explain that one to a 4 yr old?  Who knows...but  right now, it is awfully cute!!! :)

4 yr old kids ROCK!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE this age!!!
Thank you God for this moment...

M

Just another day in paradise

It was brought to my attention, that others that may read my blog think that my life is so peachy and I am one awesome super mom (which I am so not).  Let me assure you that I am in need of a lot of graces, everyday, to do what I do.  I beg God for graces to be a good mom and to know and do His Will everyday.  I try and I fail.  I try again. And I usually fail again.  I do not do well under stress and right now, stress is my life.  With 7 kids under age 10, stress is my life.  So, you can only imagine that it is tough for me.  I like to laugh and be with other people and that helps to relieve my stress.  So, you may see me laughing a lot.  That is me under stress in the company of others.  Get my point?  I hope so :).

If I don't mention it, it's b/c I have a incredibly sweet little lady to occupy my mind...but don't forget that I do have a set of 2 boys in a row-age 2 1/2 and 4...that at most times are a handful.  They are super cute and alone, they are pretty good but together they are double trouble-watch out!  I wonder if they'll always be that oil and water combo.

I mean, really.  Do they HAVE to argue about every little thing that goes into one of their hands?  For instance, this morning the hot item was hangers and then it was an empty baking powder can and then it was my keys and then it was backpacks and then cheerios/granola/oatmeal and then it was etc....   Then it was that baking powder can I thought was a great idea to use as a pencil holder for school.  Those green people would be proud of me, right?! :)  I thought it to be a swell idea too, until my 2 little men saw it.  Why, oh why, do these little men always want to play with things that are NOT toys?   And that was it for me.

I caught myself mid-sentence yelling "IF I WANT TO USE THAT CAN FOR A PENCIL HOLDER, THEN I CAN USE IT AS A PENCIL HOLDER!  DO YOU HEAR ME?"  (and yes, I think they did hear me and the rest of our neighborhood too. ;()

I do have to mention, BTW, that while this was going on with the little boys, that my older 4 were having catechism trivia games all the while they ate their breakfasts.  I guess I have to look at the bright side, right?

And for those little boys....we have moved the playroom upstairs into our living room so that I can keep a better eye on these boys.  I thought that to be quite the solution (thanks Holy Spirit!).   Indeed, it was for a short time.  Yet, those toys are up here but they want not much to do with them lately.  So, then I thought a good solution was to get rid of a bunch of toys.  Why have so many if they just sit there, right?   Give them to kids that would appreciate them and actually play with them.  That worked...for a time.  We are down to minimal play toys now.  I wonder if that was the right decision.  Oh my...

How about some playdough?  Great idea for them, but only seems to keep them occupied a few mins.  You see, they end up fighting about the playdough or the toys associated with the playdough!  Arrrrgh.  Then that playdough ends up all over the floor and we spend MORE time cleaning up the playdough then actually playing WITH the playdough :(  I say WE b/c these boys need to know when they make a mess (uh, almost 90% of the time!) they have consequences and have to clean up.  And this momma has all the time in the world to teach them that lesson....yeah, right.

Learning is so fun, huh?  Hard life for little people sometimes too.

You may say "Well then, split those boys up if they cannot play together."  And I do.  Everyday there comes a point they need to be separated and do their own thing and that is what happens.  But in my oppinion, it is not healthy to have them in thier own rooms most of the day.  I try to teach them and minister to them on how to play together.  And this momma has all the time in the world to teach them this lesson too, right?  Yeah, right.

It's not so easy, you see.

Not that easy since I have a baby in my arms most of the day.

Not that easy that one big brother likes to smush her or hold her hands or feet a little toooooooo tight.

Not that easy when I have 4 older kids that need to be doing school and need to be watched over and read to or they will not do school!

Not that easy when I have a dinner to make, a house to clean, a blog to keep updated (haaa haaa!).

Seriously, you get the point.

But, life here on earth is not supposed to be....easy.  We all have our crosses to carry.

Matthew 16:24
"If anyone wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me."

So, there you have it.

God bless,
M

Book on Boys!!!

Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons
This is the book that I am reading right now.  Have you read it?

It is called Boys Should be Boys by Meg Meeker, M.D.

Not that I have real *time* to read (haa haa) but I am up a whole lot many nights with one very special little baby girl.  Since my boys are ever growing up and challenging me to figure them out (they are not too hard to figure out but every bit helps!), this book is a 'must have on hand' book for any Mom!  I bought it a number of years ago and it is a book that I take down to reference to a lot, when I question something or need a little hlep in understanding why this or that.  I find it very helpful, even if I just read one chapter or a paragraph.

One line that I read last night that sticks out is..

"Moms need to love and love to be needed."

How very true is this!  Esp. now as I am ever needed to my sweet newborn and having many demands with all my other children as well.

P.S.  And, no I am not getting anything (although I would not turn it away if I was offered! :)) from putting a plug in for this book.  I just thought someone else could benefit from this great book as much as I have.

God bless, M

Smile! CLICK~!

Yesterday, I was all set on taking pics of our kidos for our annual Christmas photo card.  There was no way of changing my mind.  I knew that this weather would be perfect timing-so nice and only slightly chilly out - not even enough to wear jackets, if you would ask my kids.  It had to be done-that day.  With being further away from our loved ones, this is one of the Christmas cards, I am sure, they are waiting for.

And anyway, I love to take pics of my kids-esp. all of them together.  It is a real treat for me.  It brings my view into focus-on what really matters.  When I see those pics, no matter what they may bring-silliness, craziness, madness or dullness...it does not matter.  B/c these are our blessings.  Our little treasures

Each of our children has their own personality and it truly shines through when I take a bunch of the same pictures one click after another!  I love love LOVE it!!! :)

I *tried* to train them to smile those nice smiles where you can see their teeth and they actually smile :)   Not those 'smiles' where you can see teeth but they look like they are sporting some new evil teeth look at you! haaa  :)  I also *tried* to make sure that they knew when it was time to smile to do just that and then hold that smile so I could take click after click of pictures.  I still wondered, though, how this would pan out.

I really enjoy reviewing the pics and laugh at each one as they are so different and so unique in each of their own special way!

I set the kidos all up, with the help of my adoring husband-he insisted oldest to youngest :).  And I told them to smile as my hubby acted goofey behind me.  The other people at the lake/park were looking at us and I am sure either laughing at us or reminisicing of their younger days doing just the same thing.  It was quite the sight, let me tell you! :)

And off I went with the camera.
