Yes, I am still here :)
We are in the midst of preparing for 1st Holy Communion for 2 of my kids this Saturday! :)
It is a great time, albeit a bit overwhelming, but so wonderful.
Thanks to Minnesota Mom for the super First Holy Communion Novena that we are praying in preparation for the big day.
My oldest will also be an altar server which he is elated about. This innocent joy they all exude is so contagious!
Lord, help me prepare their hearts to receive you in such a special way in only a few days! Help us not to be wrapped up in all the exterior things that go along w/celebrations (clean house, good food etc...) and help me to focus again on receiving You in a special way..each time I receive You. All our patron saints, pray for us! All our guardian angels, pray for us!
God bless,
Mary

A hard habit to break
As I am laying my 3 yr old down for his daily nap, he says to me
"Oh, I love to go to sleep. And I love chocolate."
Now, that is a kid after my own heart!!! Just like his Momma!!! He is SO MY SON! :P
So, yes, my 3 yr old still takes a nap every single day. Sanity for this Momma, let me tell you. He is the cutest 3 yr old twerp around but he is also the most strong willed 3 yr old I have ever met. So, those daily naps are a must for me to be able to cool down to deal with him for the 2nd part of the day!
Yes, my 3 yr old still sleeps in a crib. Why shall we spend $ on a twin size bed that takes up too much room in our small bedrooms anyway? Did I mention that he is a twerp? Why, yes he is and that is another super good reason that he sleeps in a crib still....b/c he can fit in it!
And that chocolate comment? So what if I bribe my 3 yr old to take a nap by giving him some sort of chocolate. What? You wouldn't do that if you had a strong willed kido like mine? Ha ha! :P
Talking about naps and chocolate...I could really go for some yummy chocolate but it is Holy Week and I already broke that "no sweets this Holy Week sacrifice" already-I snagged a Cadbury chocolate egg for me all the while I was getting one for my 3 yr old. Oh, those human tendencies can be so cruel.
To those young inexperienced mommy's out there-do not think I have it all together b/c this was a learned by lots of mistakes and practice.
You may be wondering how in the world do I get my 3 1/2 yr old to still nap (besides the chocolate bribe!?)? The kido goes to bed a bit later than hubby and I hope for. It is also b/c my oldest is getting a bit older (11 1/2), and he is just not ready to fall asleep and stay quiet (he's a chatterbox) till later, at least 9:30, which is not too late for many people but for us-we are ready to go to sleep by 8/8:30!HA! Instead of fighting my 3 yr old to be quiet and get to sleep, I have embraced it by reading to him and his 2 big sisters and loving on him, without Lil' Lady around, b/c she goes to sleep around 8pm. BTW, we realized that they do not sleep well and end up having a really restless sleep if we fight them to go to sleep and it was not worth getting them down earlier just for us to be up w/them in the night! I do know if I did not give him that daily 1 hour nap, that he could probably get to bed earlier, my quiet time and sanity is much more worth it at this point!
So, as much as he is a super cutie, he is also a lot of hard work. But well worth it and wouldn't trade it for anything. And now that he is napping, I must go rest up to tackle the rest of my day!
God bless your day,
Mary

Sin-freeeeeeee
I am so happy and proud to announce that we have 2 very sparkling clean souls in our household!
2 of my bigger kids, kid #2 and kid #3, went to their First Confession last night. 200 children and 2 hours later-they are shining bright with holiness! Yes, that many children and that long, I am not kidding. This year I have both of these kidos in the same grade-2nd grade. The best decision I made-it is working SO well for all of us. A little bit of competition and peer pressure to get their work done goes a long way with these two! We realized that why push one child just to be a grade higher when clearly they are not ready for it. This is God's doing and how He made each child. I am just glad I figured it out and listened to Him early on and not when they were older. I have heard it is much harder when they get older to hold a child back a year.
Anyway, it is a 2 yr process of prep for their 1st Confession and 1st Holy Communion in our parish. We decided to not enroll them in the actual classes that the religious ed offers. They were totally okay with it-in fact, the RE director home schooled her own kids! What a blessing that homeschooling is so welcomed and encouraged around here. I am very thankful to God for this. We are using the Faith & Life series by Ignatius Press. We, as parents, find it awesome! The kids do too!!! IT is a great mix of learning and fun, coloring and writing. My children do not mind doing religion almost every day. Since we incorporate our Catholic Faith in ALL aspects of our life and our family, doing the religion 'book' is not that grueling for them :) I highly recommend this for all kids, even if they go to a CCD program. It is so easy and fun for parents to do with them, along with what they are learning in the classroom setting.
We have such an awesome diverse parish, with 31 countries represented (seriously!), that we were obviously the minority. We love our priests and parish and all the colors and beauty that is displayed. What a wonderful gift that my children get to see how 'universal' our Catholic Faith is!!! Growing up in a mainly white/Caucasian neighborhood, town and parish, I love that my own children get to see, early on, how widespread our Catholic Faith truly is.
We went as a whole family last night and I am glad we did. Even for 2 hours, I am glad we did. In fact, I sort of persisted with this decision with my husband-he thought the opposite. But, in the end, we are all SO glad we went. What a great learning experience and how awesome that my little children got to see what their big siblings got to do and what they have to look forward to. My kid #4 (age 6) and kid #6 (age 3) even asked us (ahem...begged us over and over) how they wanted to go to their own first confession THAT night! Now, that is a testimony to what a great decision it was to bring them all!
Now, onto a celebration party for my kids! We're all a little bit holier now!!!
God bless,
Mary

Seeing is believing
My kid #3, boy, age 7, says to me yesterday:
"Mom! I just looked at myself!"
"Oh Yeah?" I mustered, a bit confused.
"I mean," he goes on to say, "it's been a really long time since I looked in the mirror. And I did, and wow do I look goooooooood!"
HAAA HAAA
Laughter is such good medicine!!!!!!
God bless,

Happy 7th Birthday!
Yesterday, we celebrated my 2nd son's 7th BIRTHDAY!!!
It was Epiphany too, what a great day!
For his bday, among other things, he recieved 2 new how to draw-drawing books,-THIS ONE and THIS ONE, and artist sketch pad. He has drawn almost everything in those books already!!! haa!
Here are some pics from his Indian Birthday party that he requested:
Do you see the teepee and fire pit made from pretzel sticks?
M, L and I helped me set this cake up-they had as much fun as I did!
I absolutely love to surprise my kids with special cakes.
Those looks on their faces are worth every effort. Priceless!
Do you see those Indian people (thanks $1 store! you rock!)
Playing with the Indians from the cake...
Happy Birthday to the best and my favorite
7 year old artist EVER!

May you always smile your biggest smile. May you always be content with life. May you always give glory to God with your artwork. May you become the boy and man that God has created you to be- so very special and so unique!
I love you buddy.

6 yr old take on the $ Fairy
"Mom! The money fairy came and put some more money in my wallet. I opened it up and was like 'wow! wooohooo!"
Too funny!
I love how 6 yr olds think and are so simple!
BTW, I have NO idea who the $ fairy is but my inclination is he means the tooth fairy (which has yet to come visit him-heee heee!)
God bless,
M

One thing I despise doing is bringing my kids food shopping.
There are many other moms out there that swear by it, saying it teaches them many virtues etc...blah, blah, blah. But for me, I have many other opportunities to teach my kids virtue many times a day. So, for food shopping, that is this Momma's trip by herself.
Food shopping w/kids....It's not a risk that I want to freely endure. A risk to forget half of my shopping list, and buying too much of the wrong things, listening to fighting or whining or cyring, putting kids in time-out, taking away privledges or rewards b/c of bad behavior and then listening to them crying or pouting about it. And of yeah, I was supposed to be shopping for a family of 9 for an entire week. As if that would be a good mix...I think not. Of course if I absolutely have to, have to, have to, then by all means, I will bring them. For us, my hubby and I arrange it so that I go some night during the week and usually again on Saturday and my hubby is so wonderful that he stays home w/all the kids while I do this. I love my man.
Today we hit the point where I had to go out and get some food, at least some to hold us over till a super big shopping spree on Saturday. Usually I would have gone on Wed. night this week but I have been really pregnancy tired and fried lately! So I had to go out.
I told my hubby that I was going to do a small shopping quickly before dinner. He agreed and I felt generous so I brought along 2 of my boys-my 6 yr old and 3 yr old. They did great! There were about 3 times that my 3 yr old almost 'lost it' over something or another, but I am so proud of him b/c he held it together. Even on the way out, he was on the verge but, once again, held it together and woman behind us noticed and commented on how obedient he was! That melted my heart.
But something else that is so funny is that when we started loading up the belt with all our food (and BTW, my boys did great at that too!) my 6 year old said quite loudly:
"Woa, Mom! Who is moving that thing?!"
I had to laugh and I saw out of the corner of my eye, the cashier looking at us pretty strangely!!! I just had to belt out some laughter b/c I guess I really do not bring my kids out shopping much, huh?!?!? :)
Now that my kids have finally quieted down and went to sleep (it's about time, wouldn't you say?!?! ahh.) and my hubby is fast alseep too, I am going to try to read a little bit and quiet myself down to sleep as well.
Good night and God bless,
Mary

Hey, Caught ya!
Catching frogs is a must in our family...our backyard, at the park or playground, on a hike...you name it, my kids will find a frog there...
Then my kid #3 loves to catch these beautiful creatures! These I really like...
But things were to change....and then....just yesterday...we spotted this....
There. Can you see him better now?
WOWeeeeee!
"Get a bucket!" I yelled to my kid #3!
"Hurry!"
Sure enough he did and kid #1 went for the catch.
Success!
Check out our big catch of the day!
He really is pretty cute, don't you think?
We were really glad it was not this kind of turtle...

A snapper turtle! YIKES!!!
What makes a playdate even better? Just before our friends (from our previous state! :)) left, I noticed that lil guy walking in our backyard-and we caught him! Needless to say, they enjoyed watching him immensely! Our first EVER box turtle! Now it's time for us to learn all about turtles...who knows what else we will find and catch in our backyard!
As you can easily tell, my kids really and I mean really enjoy catching all sorts of bugs and insects, butterflies, frogs and toads, and now turtles!
I have a feeling that SCIENCE CLASS is going to be REALLY COOL THIS YEAR!!!
We're off to a great start!!!
God bless,
Mary

And Sometimes...
Sometimes...you just have to stay outside in the hot and humid 93* while pregnant with the children and then you get to see your son catch a butterfly.
And then sometimes you allow your children to set up their school desk and make a sign that says: "Butterflies for sale for $2".
And then you smile.
And you are delighted.
And you are at peace.
And you are sweaty.
And you remind the children that they are in charge of making dinner tonight, even if it is 5:14pm b/c for a very long time this Momma has made dinner after dinner after dinner and they have not eaten it.
And sometimes you allow them to make that creative crazy weird "I don't know what that is" dinner along with the 'safe' dinner of pasta and sauce.
And then you wonder if you will eat that stuff.
So, then you gently ask them if they'd be interested in making quessadillas and they respond with squeals and joy knowing that we'll all actually eat this dinner.
And sometimes this Daddy arrives home with questioning looks and smirks to his wife.
And you are happy.
And you are at peace.
And you say "Thank you Lord."
God bless,
Mary

Cemetary drive by
My 6 yr old says to me in the car...after doing our usual Thursday errand outing. Mind you, we do this every single Thursday morning:
"Mom, where are we going now?"
I replied with no answer to see if he would say "oh yeah, I remember!" or something to that extent.
Then quickly my oldest replies:
"Oh, c'mon! You know where we are going! Just imagine if you were in purgatory. I mean, you'd really want people to pray for you, right?"
LOVE THESE VAN RIDE DISCUSSIONS!!!
BTW, on Thursday mornings, we (all 6 kids +1 baby in utero and I) do our errands and always (well, most of the time) do a drive by through the town cemetary and we pray the decade of the Rosary. I found that this works miracles (literally, probably too!) b/c they are restrained in their seats and cannot get out! haaa haaa. Plus, it gives them great memories that I hope will continue to be a tradition in their lives as they grow up. It is such a simple thing to do, so easy and so helpful to others!!!
God bless,
Mary

Quick Takes: Early Summer 2010
1. We're just busy keeping cool with the humid weather.
2. Busy enjoying friends' pools. Thank God for friends with pools! Sometimes all that is needed is a pool to cool off in for even a half hour. Does wonders!
3. Our last day of school was last Friday. I did not set that in stone till last Tuesday! I just got to that point and had enough. We all had enough. It is summer now. Time to step back from the heavy duty schooling and enjoy each other without that stress. What relief! Ahhhh....I feel like I can breath now.
4. I bought a bunch of new *washable* markers and big white paper (100 sheets) and my kids are LOVING it! My son, 6 yr old, is so artistic! He says he'd like to have an art gallery and show and explain his drawings. He is so cute!!! I should post some of those. Maybe I will. So check back and see :)
5. Lots of paper plates being used up.
6. Lots of ice pops-those rocket pops-'red-white-blue' ones...those are so fun.
7. Posion Ivy has attacked some of our kids. I think it was what they were doing HERE. Whoops! So out comes the calamine lotion and our kids have little pink dots all around!
Note to self: Make sure you take out all the matchbox cars from your 3 yr old's crib. If not, if will make some for some really loud tossing and turning all night long!
God bless,
Mary

Good News~Bad News
Bad News first:
We may have a nasty stomach bug going on... I say 'maybe' b/c so far only one of my kids had it, but it was not the 24 hours and over and done with it type of bug...noway. It was 4 and a 1/2 long long days of it. The poor thing , my 6 yr old boy, is a string bean to begin with! It looks as though he might have lost 5 pounds! The sweet boy that he is said to me, barely being able to speak, after a really bad bout of sickness "Mom, thanks for taking care of me." Of course I would! That's what Mommas do. You are so welcome, lil buddy. Mommy feels for you. The rest of the gang seem to be okay for now. Time will tell. The ticking time bomb continues...As for me, I, have that nauseous feeling all day long. Seriously. So, me + helping throwing up kids or cleaning throw up is not a good combo. But I do it. B/c God calls me to. B/c it is not easy but with His help, I know we can together.
Good News:
Did you notice I said 'nauesous feeling'? You know what that means, if it is not a stomach bug, right? It can only mean one thing... YUP! Baby #7! The kids are so thrilled-God answered their precious prayers for a new baby! We're about 1 1/2 months along right now and feel so blessed and thankful. Please pray for us as we embrace this precious blessing from above. (nauesousness and all!)
God bless,
Mary

B/c God calls me to. B/c it is not easy but with His help, I know we can together.
Good News:
Did you notice I said 'nauesous feeling'? You know what that means, if it is not a stomach bug, right? It can only mean one thing... YUP! Baby #7! The kids are so thrilled-God answered their precious prayers for a new baby! We're about 1 1/2 months along right now and feel so blessed and thankful. Please pray for us as we embrace this precious blessing from above. (nauesousness and all!)
God bless,
Mary

Do you see him?
Do you see my 6 yr old son?
Nope, me either the other day.
Now you know why when I called his name a number of times and he did not answer me, that I was totally shocked and laughed when I saw he was right there in front of me.
Of course, the nerd blogger that I am, I just had to run to get my camera and told him not to move!!! ;)
Now do you see him?
Ok, let me give you a better view:

School today~outside~nature studies
Overheard my 6 yr old bug-savvy boy say to his new found catepillar friend:
"Don't worry, little buddy. I'm a friend to all animals and creatures, big and small."
HAAA! HAAA!
TOTALLY LOVE IT! ;)
We also had the privledge of finding a robin's nest full of 3 blue eggs yesterday and were so surprised by seeing a 4th today! Incredible! The nest is low enough that most of my children can monitor it and check in on their little eggs every chance they get ...or remember. It is quite cute and I bet St. Francis is proud! We decided to try to keep quiet and watch as the mother robin kept coming and going bringing little twigs or whatever she found to her little nest.
At one point, my daughter yelled out...
"Mom! I think the momma robin is having her baby!"
We read about the robins HERE and colored some pics of nests and robins HERE.
We also read THIS book about birds and THIS one about catepillars :)
I love this nature studying for school today. And since it is raining now, I am really glad we got so much fresh air learning and coloring and drawing about catepillars and robins and their eggs this morning, all morning long! :)
God bless,
Mary

Sibling love
4 year old sunshine sweetie is helping me make a special dinner. A peanut butter and jelly dinner to be exact.
"Here is just a peanut butter sandwhich for T. And wait a minute, he likes it with no crusts so I'll take them off for him."
HOW DARLING! I won't even take off his crusts but his 4 yr old sister sure will!
What a buddy.
Reminds me of the song from Toy Story "You've got a friend in me..."!!!
God bless,
Mary

Overheard outside
While outside, enjoying this warm(er) weather we are blessed with...
in the woods...
looking under rocks for bugs...
doing 'boy stuff'...
3 yr old brother says to 6 yr old brother:
"God is watching! That is bad to do!"
Those young ones sure remind us of what is important, huh?!?!
HAAA HAAA!!!

You're so cruel!
Lent is hard work.
Especially hard work.
Especially on day #2.
****Especially for a certain 6 year old little boy in my family, saying this under his breath as he is persevering through Phonics this morning:
"Man, I really did not mean to actually give up bubble gum for Lent."
"I mean, not the whole Lent."
"I really wish I did not give up bubble gum."
"This stinks. This just really really stinks."
****Then a certain sly 7 year old sister says to ME, loudly and sternly, "Mom, can I have some bubble gum during school work?"
You should have seen the face on a certain 6 year old.!
The nerve of her! Arrrr!
Siblings can be soooooooo cruel!
To let you know, I did NOT cave in and give anyone any bubble gum today. I didn't have the heart to make my son's Lent- giving -up any worse than it had to be!
There's always tomorrow....
God bless,
Mary

This is what I have to deal with lately
This is how schooling is going with my kindergartner this year.
Very interesting to say the least. It has been quite a struggle to get him to part with playing and to sit and learn some school. A struggle indeed.

Boys. Boys. Boys.

Energy. Energy. Energy.

We have been practicing numbers and counting the past few months and I'd like to think and hope he is actually getting it! To his pure delight- this is how he is doing his math lately.
Hey, at least it is keeping his interest and I have to just laugh. How unbelievably cute, huh?
Happy Monday! Happy Math!
God bless,
Mary
